Kamaruzzaman review hearing Wednesday

Death row convict war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman’s petition, seeking review of his death penalty, has been lined up for a hearing at the Appellate Division on Wednesday.

However, the defence lawyers has moved a plea with the Appellate Division, second time in a month, seeking four-week adjournment in the hearing on his review petition on Tuesday.

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Kamaruzzaman's lawyers submitted the time plea saying that Khandker Mahbub, also an adviser to the BNP chief, was physically ill and had been advised by his doctor to take rest.

Earlier on March 9, the apex court bench led by Chief Justice SK Sinha set April 1 for the hearing, responding to an adjournment petition filed by the defence that showed personal difficulties of senior lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain.

Kamaruzzaman’s lawyers filed the petition on March 5 seeking review of the death penalty upheld by the Appellate Division on November 3 last year.

The Jamaat leader was sentenced to death on May 9, 2013 for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The full text of the Appellate Division judgement was released on February 18 and the International Crimes Tribunal the following day issued a warrant to execute the death sentence.

It is the second appeals case set to be disposed of. War criminal and Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla was executed on December 12, 2013 after the completion of all legal procedures.

He did not seek presidential mercy.
